Constipation and pregnancy

Constipation is a common problem during pregnancy, and on the whole is mainly caused by the changing levels of the female hormone progesterone, which naturally slows the movement of food and waste through your digestive tract. The problem may be compounded further during pregnancy by the pressure of your growing uterus on the rectum. Iron supplements which pregnant mothers make take can often make constipation during pregnancy worse.

Some tips for preventing and providing relief from constipation:

Eat a high-fibre diet, including cereals, whole-grain breads, and fresh fruits and vegetables every day. A couple of spoons of unprocessed wheat bran added to your cereal in the morning and followed by a glass of water can help stimulate your bowel.

Drink plenty of water — at least six to eight glasses a day. Fruit juice, especially prune juice, can also be beneficical for stimulating the bowel.
