In times of recession, independence is key.  Not your independence but the independence of the companies you use.This economic downturn has taught us that we have to be smart with our spending and using independence companies can work out to be in our best interests.  If we spend with large chains that money will disappear off to some other country and probably go right into the pocket of some fat cat.But if you spend your money with an independent company they money stays in the local economy.  This is not altruism.  If money stays in the nearby economy you will benefit more.  And it works for anything from buying milk to procuring the services of a Civil Engineering Consultancy.  When such large projects are undertaken the use of independent consultants will fuel the local economy creating jobs and keeping the money flowing on a local level.
